Established in 1887 by the amalgamation of Hyderabad School and the Madarsa-i-Aliya, Nizam College is one of the oldest and most esteemed institutions of higher education in South India. It was affiliated to the University of Madras for 60 years after its inception, and was made a Constituent College of Osmania University on 19th February 1947.
Dr. Aghornath Chattopadhyay , father of Sarojini Naidu, was the founder principal of the College (other Principals). The college was first granted Autonomous Status for Undergraduate Courses by the UGC in 1988-89 and has already completed 20 successful years of autonomy.
Students come from a wide range of social status and different regions which creates a healthy atmosphere and an ambience of a global community with rich cultural exchange. Nizam College is foremost in the preference of students from various Asian and African countries. Foreign students constitute 25% of the total strength of the college. They are from countries like: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Maldives, Mauritius, Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, Oman, Dijibouti, Iran, Saudi Arabia, China,Yemen, and Eritrea. Our teachers are highly qualified and dedicated. 98% of them hold doctoral degrees and guide research scholars. They undertake high quality research with the help from UGC, MHRD etc.
As part of the value-added activities Nizam College has NSS, NCC, Women's Cell, and basic infrastructure for the differently-abled. All these help the institution to establish meaningful linkages between Campus & Community, Colleges & Villages, and Knowledge & Action. The Alumni Association takes up multi-faceted developmental activities. In Nizam College we always strive for excellence.
