  1. Constituent College of Osmania University: Nizam College is a constituent college of Osmania University—that is, an off-campus college of the University. Therefore it is directly governed by the University administration. The departments and the faculty work under the guidance of the heads and chairpersons in the campus colleges. As a university college, it has greater scope for academic research and innovative programmes. The large number of teachers with doctoral degrees and post-doctoral research is a sure sign of academic excellence.
  2. Academic Autonomy at UG Level: Academic autonomy at the UG level enables Nizam College to review and revise curriculum according to the needs of the stakeholders. Innovative programmes coupled with highly qualified faculty have enabled Nizam College to achieve improved standards of teaching, learning and research and also to be conferred the status of a College with Potential for Excellence.
  3. CPE - College with Potential for Excellence Status: The CPE status was conferred upon the College by UGC under the X Plan which adopted an effective strategy to improve teaching, learning and research in colleges, based on the premise that higher education is one of the ways of producing talented, skilled and value-oriented human resources. The colleges selected for CPE status were evaluated on 70 different parameters. Nizam College performed commendably and was sanctioned Rs. 1 crore for further development programmes. Under this scheme the following plans were further strengthened. The College was selected under CPE phase –II during XI plan period

  4. NAAC Accreditation: Based on curricular aspects, innovative learning, teaching and evaluation methods, research, consultancy, extension programmes, infrastructure and learning resources, student support and progression, organization and management procedures, and healthy practices Nizam College was accredited by NAAC. After NAAC accreditation, Nizam College has constituted an IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) as a post-accreditation quality sustenance activity. Having completed the stipulated time period, Self Study Report for re-accreditation has been submitted to NAAC in the month of October 2010.
  5. Infrastructure: The College is located in the heart of the city of Hyderabad in a sprawling 25-acre campus. There are numerous buildings housing classrooms, laboratories, computer labs, library and administrative offices. The vast area helps in creating atmosphere conducive for holistic development of the learners. Equipped with 2 Seminar Halls, Language Lab, Play Grounds, a Boxing Hall, a Canteen, Library and parking space the college has a congenial setting for learning. Last academic year we have added 20 classrooms and a new hostel building. This year, more rooms have been added in the new block of the College Hostel. A new building for Chemistry is under construction.
  6. Mentoring: A mentoring scheme is underway in order to make the students feel a sense of belonging as they seek guidance in academic and non-academic matters from members of the faculty. A group of teachers from various departments form the mentoring team. In addition to student mentoring, the College also provides mentoring facilities for faculty, non-teaching and support staff.
  7. Remedial Teaching for Weak Students: Sufficient care is taken by way of remedial teaching for academically weak students. The timetable for U.G. students is drafted in such a way that sufficient leisure hours are earmarked for students to take special assistance. Many departments have organised remedial coaching for Telugu Medium students, students who need special care, foreign students and students of other vernacular media—Chemistry, Political Science, English, Sanskrit, Hindi, to name a few. Sometimes special classes are arranged during holidays.
  8. Evaluation of teaching by students: The College has introduced student evaluation of each course/teacher. A questionnaire is given to the student at the end of the academic year and the feedback is collated and recorded. Based on these observations, relevant discussions are held with the teacher/s concerned in order to implement suggestion given by students and enhance the quality of teaching – learning.
  9. In-Service training for teachers: Teachers of the College are regularly deputed for training in special subjects. Attendance at the Orientation Course and Refresher Courses is a must for junior teachers and most of them have participated in these. Teachers have attended special training programmes for teaching vocational subjects JKC (Jawahar Knowledge Centre) offers regular programmes to train faculty of MCA department.
  10. Career Guidance and Placement Centre: Under the CPE scheme, the Career Guidance and Placement Center was established in December 2004. During the X Plan CPE free training programme COPT (Career Orientation and Placement Training) was conducted for students of UG and PG in batches of about 50. About 500 students per academic year benefited from this programme. A one-day workshop on Soft Skills was conducted. Special career related programmes are also regularly organized. The Center also conducted a 6 weeks Certificate Course in Soft Skills. 10 batches of students completed the course between 2007 and 2008. Usually more than 50 companies conduct recruitment programmes in College and more than 100 students find placements in reputed companies. But economic recession has had an impact on the job scene. In spite of this about 20 companies visited the college for campus placements. During the year 20010-11 more than 102 students got selected in various companies through campus recruitments. In IDBI alone 47 students have been selected in the Campus Recruitment.
  11. ELTC: English Language Teaching Centre regularly conducts self-financing training courses in English language skills. Some of the courses conducted in the past two years are English Language Course for Foreign students of O.U and Nizam College 2008-09; Proficiency Course in English for Indian students of Nizam College. 2008-09; Basic English Course for Foreign students of Nizam College. 2008-09; Course in English Communicational Skills for Students, Professionals and others, January 2009. (2 batches); Course on Writing Skills, April 2009, Course in Spoken and Written English for Students, Professionals and others, May - June 2009; Course in Spoken and Written English for Students, Professionals and others, June 2009; Course in Spoken and Written English for Students, Professionals and others, Sept-Oct 2009. The centre proposes to conduct Teacher Training Courses for the school and college teachers in the stateduring 2011-12.
  12. CEDM (Center for Educational Development of Minorities): The College has a Centre for Educational Development of Minorities, sponsored by the Minorities Welfare Development, Government of Andhra Pradesh, Which conducts free coaching programmes for DIET-CET, EAMCET, DSC, ICET, Ed-CET,NET, APPSC Group-I,II & IV etc., and the candidates are also provided free study material. 2600 candidates have availed coaching under this scheme during the year 2010-11 and results are very much encouranging and highest ranks are secured in these courses. In addition to the competitive examinations free coaching and study material is also provided to X Class Urdu/ Telugu medium students in 16 districts and pass percentage of the coaching students is much higher than the state level result. The number of beneficiaries was 6000 during the year. The Centre is also conducting classes in communication skills. Mr. D. Sridhar Babu the then Hon’ble Minister of Higher Education and Professor T.Tirupati Rao, Ex-Vice-Chacellor, Osmania University has participated in the events and motivated the participants.
  13. NCC Activities:

    NCC Progress made during the year 2010-2011

    On 5th Jan.2011, 26 NCC Cadets of Nizam College were appointed, to perform the duties of various appointments of NCC Coy during the next NCC parade.

    On 1st Aug. 2010, NCC Cadets of Nizam College attended Army Attachment Camp in 6th Bihar Regiment

    In Sep. 2010, The NCC Cadets of Nizam College organized a Tree Plantation Programme in the College.

    From 19th Jan. to 30th Jan. 2011, Yugandhar Reddy, B.A. III Year attended National Integration Camp of NCC at Pataudi, Haryana.

  14. Games & Sports: Numerous games and sports activities are organized by the Department of Physical Education. The vast campus of the College is equipped with grounds for Cricket, Volley Ball, Basket Ball, Shuttle, Hockey, Kabbadi, Foot Ball, Korf Ball and rooms for indoor games like Table Tennis, Chess, etc. This is the only college in the twin cities to have such facility other than the O.U. Campus. A Multi-Station gymnasium costing Rs.1 lakh has been installed in the College recently. The epartment conducts various events both at the College and Inter-college level. Our students have participated in the Inter-Collegiate Tournaments in some of the above events in addition to swimming and athletics. The performance of the teams is commendable and our teams have got places in Cricket, Table Tennis Basket Ball, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Vollyball, Wrestling, Judo and Athletics. Our students have participated in many games at Junior Nationals, Inter-University and Junior State level. 30 students represented O.U, in the Inter University Tournaments during the academic year 2010-11, 4 students of the College represented Hyderabad Cricket Association in State, National and Vizzy Trophy. One Visually Challenged student Mr. Ajay Kumar Reddy, B.A. represented India in the Physically Handicapped World Cup Cricket Tournament held at London.
  15. Extra Curricular Activities & Extension Works: Students constitute the core of an educational institution and the overall development of their personality should be the prime motive of educational institutions. Having realized this basic need, Nizam College has been providing various opportunities to its students for a total and meaningful personality development. The students’ affairs are guided by a Students Welfare Officer appointed by the Principal. One of the major activities is the annual cultural meet, viz., “EXPRESSIONS.” It provides an opportunity to our students to organise various literary and cultural events and to interact with hundreds of students from all the other colleges in the city. Students are also sponsored by the College to participate in various cultural and literary events at the Inter-College and Inter-University level both within and outside the State. Our students have started various Clubs Science Club, Eco – Awareness, Book Review Club, Population Club, Social Productivity Club, Crafts Club, General Knowledge Club, Learners’ Club, Thought Club, Creative Writing Club, Computer and Creativity Club, Laughter Club, Music Club. The Discussion Forum holds debates on current issues, the Ray-Orion Club organizes cultural and literary activities, the Eco Club creates environmental awareness, the Science Club keeps up with the innovations in the field of science and so on. A Women’s Cell constituted for gender sensitization enables students to participate in awareness programmes. Girl students are given necessary support for organising seminars or discussions on the role and problems of women in the developmental process. Educational tours and programmes are encouraged. The year highlighted these activities during the year-long 120-years Celebration from February to December.
  16. NSS Activities: The enrolment in the National Service Scheme is quite high and over 150 candidates are on rolls. NSS activities are held under the direction of the NSS Programme Officer who is appointed by the NSS Coordinator, Osmania University, on the Principal's recommendation. Nizam College has two NSS units one for Social Sciences and the other for Sciences. NSS volunteers have been actively participating in several programmes like the Green Run, Tree Plantation programmes organised by the MCH, National Integration Communal Harmony Seminar, Sadbhavana Run conducted by the Directorate of Youth Services, Govt. of A.P. They also organised a very successful blood donation camp in the College. Mr. J. Nagaraju, B.Sc. III year has been selected for participation in the NSS Republic Parade Camp – 2011 held at Campaigning Ground, Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi from 1st - 31st January 2011.
  17. Multimedia Lab: Under the CPE Scheme the College has established a Multimedia Lab during the academic year 2004-2005. This lab enables the teachers to prepare and present lessons in multimedia format. Self-Financing short-term courses are planned for teachers and students. This enhances the quality of teaching-learning and benefits numerous students. Workshops are held to train teachers in the preparation of lessons in multimedia format.
  18. Language Lab: A language lab with software for language learning skills is available. This lab enables Computer Aided Language Learning and Computer Based Testing. Infrastructure to view films has been added to the lab for the ID course ‘Film and Literature’
  19. Psychological Testing and Counseling Cell: This Cell offers personal counseling as well as psychological testing for school and college students related to intelligence, personality, family dynamics, early identification of MR, LD and other behavioral problems.
  20. Interaction with Parents: The College tries to maintain an interactive relationship with the parents / guardians of the students on a regular basis. We, therefore, request the parents/guardians of our students to devote some time to check the progress of their children / wards. We also request the parents to furnish their current contact details and feel free to contact us as often as necessary. An atmosphere where our students can express themselves freely and overcome inhibitions is thus created. Formal meets with parents to facilitate a tripartite interaction is a regular feature.
  21. Alumni Association: The Alumni Association of the college meets regularly. Some activities taken up by the alumni are: interaction with the present students, extension lectures in their respective fields of expertise, cultural activities and aid to improve infrastructural facilities. Some renowned alumni participated in the recent 120-years celebrations and gave valuable advice. A volume of alumi reminiscences Kaliedoscope was published to mark the occasion.   22. Academic Awards: A Gold Medal in Economics has been instituted to be awarded to the topper in BA (English Medium, EPP). An Annual Endowment Lecture in Economics has also been initiated. An alumnus Sri M.A. Krishnamurthy has instituted a prize for the students scoring highest marks in Mathematics at the undergraduate level. Others are also encouraged to institute similar academic awards/medals to encourage students in their march towards excellence.
  23. Library & Study Center: The College has a well-equipped main library with about 1, 07,577 books and 78 journals which include text and reference books and research journals. The library functions on all working days from 9.00 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. The main library is open on holidays during examinations to facilitate students preparing for the exams. The Library is headed by a Librarian and assisted by 13 personnel. Books on all the subjects of general interest are available here. Besides the main library, some of the post-graduate and undergraduate departments have their own Seminar Libraries. Recently a special wing of library has been established—exclusively for the professional courses like BCA, M.Sc(IS), MBA and MCA. A separate “Study Centre” caters to the needs of students belonging to various colleges in the twin cities and also to those appearing privately for university examinations. The Centre functions from 12.00 noon to 6.00 p.m. on all days of the week except Thursdays. The Centre has more than 4000 text and reference books which include books from all disciplines. Digitalisation of the library has been completed this year.
  24. Hostel: The College has a hostel at a furlong’s distance from the academic campus and has been catering to about 500 boarders. It is managed by the General Warden, a Mess Warden and Vice Principal (Hostels). On the recommendations of the Principal, Osmania University appoints these officers. The University also has hostels in the O.U campus for the benefit of M.A & M.Com students of Nizam College. The College has no hostel accommodate for girls and for boys admitted in UG first year. Accommodation is available for II and III year UG boys and PG (M.Sc.) boys. PG girls have hostel accommodation at OU Campus Ladies Hostel. A separate New Girls Hostel for the students of Nizam College has been constructed
  25. Health Center: The College has a Health Center with a full-time doctor looking after the needs of both staff and students. The Health Center is well-equipped for first-aid and outpatient consultancy. The Center also serves the needs of hostel boarders. It also helps in organising health camps on the campus.
  26. Grievance Redressal Cell: Any student who has a complaint can register it and ask for help. Drop your suggestions/complaints into drop-boxes provided in all blocks of the college. Senior professors who form part of the GR Cell will advice and provide solutions to the aggrieved. They also consider issues like facilities in college, staff and student related matters, theft and discipline related matters.
  27. Add-on & Skill-oriented Courses: UGC has recognised the need for value-added courses at the UG level. With this objective in view, Nizam College has designed Certificate and Diploma courses approved and sanctioned by the UGC. These courses are offered without affecting the regular classes. Many students find these courses interesting and valuable. The Certificate courses entail coursework of 300 hours limited to one semester while the Diploma courses have 600 hours covering two semesters.
  28. M.Sc Chemistry (Pharmaco Informatics) is started for the first time in India, at Nizam College during the year 2009-10. This is part funded by UGC under inter disciplinary innovative program. It has all the best features of Pharma programs, Organic Chemistry and The Chem Informatics and Computer aided drug designing curriculum being included.
