DEPARTMENT OF Theatre Arts

The only attractive, charmed and purposeful Department meant for Theatre Arts in the entire university which was established in the year 1982 at Nizam College offering a two year PG Diploma in Theatre Arts with an equal emphasis on academic studies on Drama and Theatre and Presentation in several outstanding performances and continued the same course up to 1998. In 1999 the Department introduced a two year M.A. program in the place of PG Diploma in Theatre Arts. In the year 2003 the Department introduced Ph.D program. So far at about 500 hundred students completed their courses (PG Diploma in Theatre Arts and M.A. in Theatre Arts) and many of them are working in Films, TV channels, AIR, SIET, Dooradarshan, Song and Drama Division as an actors, Production assistants, Producers besides an active participation of Theatre Activities. Some of them are working as Professors, Readers in Theatre Discipline in different Universities. The Department completed 29 years of successful, eventful and purposeful journey and occupied an important place in the history of Osmania University and this is the first department which introduced Theatre Arts course at PG level in South India. Envisaged to teach Theatre as a discipline and included theories of Acting, Directing, Theatre Production and Technical Theatre. The department gained all-India recognition with its trend- setting performances in different theatrical styles such as Classical, Realistic, Folk-oriented, Modern Street Theatre and other Experimental Theatre Performances. Every year four major student productions takes place besides workshops on different areas of Theatre. Staging plays, conducting physical exercises with special focus on Body language, improvisations and voice exercises regularly with a kind of practical-orientation which creates interest on the minds of the students and lead to become very good performers. The Department produced many theatre teachers, writers, actors, directors, technicians and most of them are settled in their respective jobs.

Famous theatre exponent of Andhra Pradesh who is serving as Head since 1990, & Chairman, BOS since 1994. He has 20 years of PG teaching experience in Theatre and Electronic Media and produced hundreds of promising actors, directors and technicians and strives for catering the needs of Theatre activity and Electronic Media in A.P. Many students who have studied and trained under his able guidance working in films, TV channels, Radio besides Theatre activities. He has 6 years experience in Research supervision and at present he is guiding 5 Ph.D students. He is utilizing his services in all the Departments of Theatre Arts in the State besides conducting Theatre workshops for Non-theatre students at different levels in the State. He also served as an adviser committee member of National School of Drama Regional Resource Centre, Bangalore and Selection Committee member of Performing Arts, CCRT. He had 40 years experience in the areas of Acting, Directing, Script writing, Make-Up and other technical aspects of Theatre. He also one of the eminent personalities in Electronic Media in the areas of News-reading, Anchoring, Dubbing besides Writing scripts, Acting and Directing. He wrote 10 plays for Stage, more than 50 plays for Radio and 20 plays for Television. He also has 20 years of experience in judging the different levels of Drama competitions conducted every year in Andhra Pradesh including Sate and Central Govt. Organizations. He also serving as a member, Board of Studies, Visiting Faculty, Department of Theatre Arts, P.S.Telugu University. He also utilizing his services as an examiner, paper setter, and evaluator for Theatre Departments, P.S Telugu University, Andhra University and Yogi Vemana University for the last 15 years. He also appointed as selection committee member, faculty positions Andhra University for two years. He evaluated 2 Ph.D’s and 4 M.Phil’s from different universities as an external expert.

He has been keeping many theatre aspirants' hopes alive, albeit the odds. He traces his journey on and off the stage with the life. Bhaskar ‘sir', as he is fondly called, exudes a quality for which the Marathi literary and theatre cultures of Hyderabad are known for: an understated quest for excellence. From 2005 to 2010 he evaluated 4 Ph.D thesis’s among them two from University of Rajasthan, one from Andhra University and one from Dr. Baba Saheb Amedkar Marathwada University. He has conducted more than 150 workshops in various areas of theatre. And given lectures to FTII Pune, NSD, Doordarshan, E TV and Prithvi Theatre, Bombay. Nearly 100 plays he has directed in Telugu, Marathi, Hindi, Urdu and English performed in various places in India. He is the member of expert committee under the Ministry of Culture, under the scheme of financial assistance to Performing Arts. The number of actors and theatre directors trained by him who has made it good in theatre, television and films either here or in Mumbai is legion. So also are the cross-cultural and linguistic currents which he and Rangadhara Theatre Group through its memorable productions have artfully streamed into the cultural soil of Hyderabad.

He is a well known Teacher, Actor in the theatre circles of Hyderabad. He was the former student of the department and a Gold medalist. He is serving the department for the last 12 years in the area of Telugu and Sanskrit Theatres. To date he has acted in more than 100 Mythological and Historical productions and has directed nearly 20 productions. He is considered as an expert in the field of Verse and Musical Theatre and has number of excellent productions to his credit. He has contributed his valuable artistic work in almost all the mediums like Stage, TV and Radio. He has given more than 30 lectures in various aspects of Telugu Theatre in different National Seminars.

He is a Theatre Activist from Hyderabad and former PG student of Theatre Department, Nizam College, O.U. His research interest was on “Form, Performance and Aesthetics”- a case study of Naga Mandala (a community ritualistic art form of coastal Karnataka). To date he has acted in more than 6 plays, written more than 4 plays and 8 Playlets and has directed nearly 30 Play productions. He is considered as an expert in the field of “Rural Theatre” and a number of excellent and meticulous rural social awareness productions to his credit. He has conducted more than 25 Theatre/Acting workshops in and around the Hyderabad and also organizing three Cultural Organizations like AREA (Art Related Experimental Association); ACT (Association of Community Theatre) & ART (Association of Rural Theatre) at a time as a General Secretary. He has presented more than 7 research papers in International Theatre Conferences like ISTR, IFTR, CPRACSIS etc. At present he is working as a part-time Faculty in Theatre Arts Department, Nizam College, O.U. And he is working for Films, Educational Institutions as an Acting Teacher and as a Personality Developer for NSS Seasonal Service Camps in different villages. Utilizing Theatre as a Medium of ‘Social Change’ he is happy to state that the results are positive and progressive.

He is a Theatre Activist from Hyderabad. His research interest is on “Environmental Theatre”- a case study on Telugu Theatre. To date he has acted in more than 15 plays, written 2 playlets and has directed nearly 20 Play productions. He is considered as an expert in the field of Folk Theatre forms like Chindu Bhagavatam and Veedi Natakam. He has conducted more than 5 Theatre/Acting workshops in and around the Hyderabad. He is also organizing a Cultural Organization, Deccan Theatre in a Capacity of General Secretary. He has presented more than four research papers in several national theatre conferences. At present he is working as a part-time Faculty in Theatre Arts Department of Nizam College, O.U. And he is working for Films as an Actor and for theatre as a Director.

He is a Theatre Activist from Hyderabad. His research interest is on 'Concept of Suitradhara in Folk Theatre forms of South India'. To date he acted in more than 60 plays, written 3 plays and 5 play-lets and directed nearly 150 Play productions. He is considered as an expert in the field of Children Theatre. He has conducted more than 30 Theatre/Acting workshops in and around the Hyderabad. He is also organizing a Cultural Organization named ‘Nishumbita’. He has presented more than 8 research papers in several international theatre conferences. His contribution of using theatre as a medium of training and education in schools and rehabilitation at the juvenile homes, observation homes, home for the street children are remarkable. Awarded Natya Bhushan in the National Theatre Conference at the International Theatre Festival, Cuttack, 2004. At present he is working as a part-time Faculty in Theatre Arts Department, Nizam College, O.U. And he is working for theatre as a Director and Theatre Consultant.
