The Department of Sociology is one of the largest Departments in Nizam College offering both UG courses, PG courses, Career Oriented Add on courses along with research guidance at M.Phil and PhD levels. The Department of Sociology, Nizam College is an offshoot of the evolution, growth and development of ninety years of sociological endeavors in Osmania University. The important objectives of the courses offered are:

Mr. R. Suryanarayana Reddy joined service on 21st November 1983 and is Associate Professor since 1991. He got his M.A. in 1976 from JNU, New Delhi, M.Phil in 1980 (Part I). His areas of specialisation are Development and Change; Sociological Theory and Thought’, Modernity-Post Modernity and interest areas include Tribal and Rural Development, Globalization, Development and change. He has published 4 research papers in national journals and books. He has held many administrative positions including Chief PRO, Osmania University, Deputy Director and Director- Academic Staff College, Osmania University, Head, Department of Sociology, Nizam College. Presently nominated member of Academic Council, Nizam College and Coordinator - Academic and Corporate affairs, Nizam College and Coordinator- Diploma Course in Human Relations and Personality Development
Dr. S. Devaprakasham joined service in January 1992 and is Professor since 2009. He got his M.A. in 1978, M.Phil in 1984 and Ph.D in 1994. His area of Specialisation is ‘Medical Sociology’ and interest areas include ‘Rural Sociology’. He has Published 5 research papers in national journals and 1 book ‘Testimony of Homeopaths on HIV- AIDS.’ Significant publications are ‘Self Medication and Meddling with Disease’, Orient Journal of law and Social Sciences, Vol. 1 (11) Jan 2007and ‘Precautions for Healthy living’, Orient Journal of law and Social Sciences, Vol 1 (4) March 2007. He has done two research projects: ‘AIDS in Homeopathy perspective’ (UGC, 2005) and ‘Care for Health Recovery’, (UGC- SAP, 2007). Presently he is the Head, Department of Sociology, Nizam College, Chairperson, Board of Studies, Dept of Sociology, Osmania University and Course Coordinator, Certificate Course in Human Relations and Personality Development being offered by the department.
He joined service on 16th January 1992; he is Associate Professor since 2005. He obtained his M.A. in 1983 and M. Phil in 1990. He was awarded UGC/NET in 1988. He has published 1 Research paper in Bulletin of Indian Institute of History of Medicine (Vol 21, 1991) titled: ‘Growth of the Hospital System in Hyderabad (c.1880-c.1950)_
historical and demographic aspects’. He has taught courses in the Sociology of Development, Environmental Sociology and Globalization and retains an interest in World Systems Analysis
Dr. P. Vishnu Dev has been with the Department of Sociology since 1999. He is working as Assistant Professor in the Department and teaches for Post Graduate (M.A.) students in Nizam College (Osmania University). He had also taught in Arts and Social Sciences College in Osmania University and Koti Women’s College, Hyderabad. He had done his Doctoral Thesis on “Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and Social Transformation”. He was Coordinator for NSS. He Worked as an Officer for NCC. And he had also worked as General Warden of Nizam College Hostel. He is also a Life Member of Andhra Pradesh Sociological Society (APSS) in Andhra Pradesh and Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA) in New Delhi. More specifically, his areas of specialization of teaching and research interests cover Political Sociology, Tribal studies and Empowerment of Weaker Sections, and PRA. He had actively participating and contributed several papers in National and International Seminars and also Workshops. He delivers lecturers on Tribal Empowerment and Social Justice. He is also active in several social welfare activities.
Dr. Vinita Pandey is Assistant Professor (C) in Department of Sociology, Nizam College since January 2003. Her qualifications are M.A. (Sociology), UGC-NET, PhD. She was awarded her PhD in 2004. Her specialization is Urban Sociology and areas of interest are Development Studies and Social Psychology. She teaches both UG and PG courses apart from taking classes in the Add on Courses being offered by Department of Sociology. She has PRA field experience since 2003. She has served as College Placement Officer and is presently member IQAC and Women’s Cell. She is Visiting Faculty at PG College of Law, (Osmania University), Basheerbagh, and Centre for Distance Education, Osmania University. She has done two Orientation courses at UGC-Academic Staff College, Osmania University and UGC-Academic Staff College, University of Hyderabad. She has done Refresher Course in Social Sciences at UGC-Academic Staff College, University of Hyderabad. She has presented about 24 research papers in various national and international conferences. She has published 03 books and 11 research papers (03 international publications) in various journals and books. She also has reviewed the book “Themes in Social Stratification and Mobility: Essays in honor of Professor K.L. Sharma edited by Ishwar Modi, B.K. Nagla and Arvind Kumar Agrawal” published in Sociological Bulletin, Journal of the Indian sociological Society, Vol.b60, No.2, May- August 2011. She is life member of Andhra Pradesh Sociological society, Indian Sociological Society and Indian Academy of Social Sciences. She is Executive member of OYSTER (Organization by Youth for Social Transformation and Environmental Recoup) and Vice-Chairman of CARPED (Center for Action Research for Peoples Development). She has done one joint minor research project titled “Changing faces of Social Communication: A Note on Social Media in Hyderabad”, SAP, DSA-Phase I, UGC, Department of Sociology, Osmania University, Hyderabad, 2010. She is presently doing major research project titled “Cosmopolitanism and Regionalism: Rethinking Urban Development in Post Industrial Cities – A Case Study of Hyderabad”, ICSSR, New Delhi, sanctioned in January 2011. She was awarded First Prize for Best presentation titled “Shaping the Nizamians – The Global Citizens” at Workshop on Innovative classroom Strategies – 20th May 2009, organised by Nizam College and Vidya Shiromani Award for Excellent and Commendable services in the field of Education by Citizens Council, Andhra Pradesh, India, September 2007.
Mr. R. Ravi Kumar has been with the Department of Sociology since 2007. He is working as Assistant Professor(c) in Nizam College (Osmania University). He teaches for both Under Graduate (B.A.) and Post Graduate (M.A.) students. He is also a Course coordinator for a Diploma course in “Criminology and Correctional Administration”. He is also a life member of Andhra Pradesh Sociological Society (APSS). More specifically, his areas of specialization of teaching and research interests cover Sociology of Education, Industrial Sociology, Development Studies, Criminology, PRA. He had actively participating and contributed several papers in International, National Journals and Seminars (Total 25 Papers). He was associated with several research projects such as “Socio-Economic survey for Kudgi. Super Thermal Power Project 4000 MW Bijapur District in Karnataka. NTPC, Secunderabad. He is also a Resource person to teach for both Under Graduate (B.A.) and Post Graduate (M.A.) students in Prof. G. Ram Reddy Distance Education Osmania University. He has served before at ICFAI University, Hyderabad. He had worked as a Faculty Member in Hyderabad IAS Study Circle, Hyderabad. He had worked as a Principal and Lecturer in Nallanda Vocational Jr. College, Narayankhed, Dist-Medak, A.P. He had submitted his thesis on “Primary Education in Rural Areas: Problems and Prospects: A Study of Medak District in Andhra Pradesh”.
He is also “General Secretary”, for “Osmania University Teachers’ Association Contract (OUTA-C) in Nizam College”. And he is also “Joint Secretary”, for “Universities Teachers Association Contract Andhra Pradesh (UTACAP)”.
Mr. K. Bhavani Shankar is working as Assistant Professor (C) in the Department of Sociology, since 2008. He is dealing with UG, PG and Add on courses being offered by the Department of Sociology. His areas of specialization are Industrial Sociology, Development Studies and Social Development. He is Course Coordinator for Diploma in Development Management Studies and Development Research Methodologies (Diploma being offered in collaboration with A Madhava Reddy – Andhra Pradesh Academy of Rural Development (AMR-APARD), Rajendranagar, Hyderabad).
He is pursuing his Ph.D. in Sociology on “Social Implications of Economic Reforms and Globalization in Andhra Pradesh: A Sociological study of Warangal District”. He is also the visiting Faculty for Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Punjagutta, Hyderabad. He is Resource Person for Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University, Hyderabad and PG Ram Reddy Center for Distance Education (PGRCDE), Osmania University (Both for UG and PG programmes. He has worked as an Academic Consultant, Dept of Sociology, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University, Hyderabad. He has worked as Research Assistant, Centre for Social Empowerment, for Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University, Hyderabad. He worked as Lecturer for Kavikulguru Institute of Technology and Sciences, Ramtek, Maharasthra. He also worked as “Training Counselor” in Skill Development programme for Consortium of Employees Association for the Elimination of Child Labour (CEASE CHILD LABOUR) Organization funded by International Labour Organization.

He was the one of the Member in the Research Team for the Book “The Empowered Voices” of students who pursued their education in Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University, Hyderabad.

Bhanumati Shastry Manthaw, M.A., M.Phil (Sociology), is currently persuading her Ph.D. in Sociology from Osmania University, Hyderabad on “Socio-Economic Impact of Industrialization on Rural Areas – A Study of “Sirpur Paper Mills” in Adilabad District of Andhra Pradesh”. She is working as a Part-time Faculty for Post-Graduate Classes with Nizam College, Hyderabad from 2009. She is working as Visiting Faculty for Add-on Courses - Diploma in Development Management Studies & Development Research Methodologies and Diploma in Criminology and Correctional Administration, from 2009 onwards. She has worked as a Visiting Faculty with University College of Commerce and Management, Osmania University, Hyderabad, for Community Development Program in 2010.
