Psychology is a science that seeks to understand behavior and mental processes and a profession that applies empirical knowledge to improve the lives of people. Psychologists study the intersection of two critical relationships - one between brain function and behavior, and other between the environment and behavior. Because it is a scientific discipline, psychologists follow scientific methods, using careful observation, experimentation, and analysis. The Department of Psychology, Nizam College which was established in 1963 was the only department to offer psychology as one of the optional at B.A. for boys in twin cities. The department offers an undergraduate course. The strength of students enrolled in B.A. I year is 120 as the subject of psychology is offered with four different combinations namely Psychology, Sociology and Marketing; Psychology, Sociology and Philosophy; Psychology, English Literature and Marketing; and Psychology, English Literature and Philosophy. Currently, the department has three teachers and one lab staff (Under Earn while Learn Scheme). The department has a well qualified staff with a rich research experience and an equal proficiency in extension activities of testing and counseling. The department also runs a Counseling centre which was initially established in the year 1984. It is the only department under Osmania University to offer psychological counseling even to boys. University offered one time Grant in 1991 and Counselling centre restarted as Centre for Counseling and meditation in 1997. Later, under Centre of Potential Excellence (2005), “Psychological Testing and Counseling Centre” was sanctioned.
PDr. P. Swathi is a product of Osmania University who has completed her P.G.(1997) and Ph.d (2003) in Psychology from the department of Psychology,Osmania University. She is a Gold Medalist in her P.G. course. She started her career as a Research Assistant at NIN (1 Year) and later as a part time Academic Consultant in 2001 at the department of Psychology, O.U. where she taught cognitive, social and counseling Psychology.
Since 2004, she is working as a full time academic consultant at Nizam College. Currently, her designation is Assistant Professor© and I/c Head, Department of Psychology. She taught all branches of Psychology at U.G; P.G; And P.G. Diploma Courses. As I/c Head, she initiates number of programmes on various Psychological issues to create awareness among students and public.
She is a Course writer to various courses for different universities like O.U; BRAOU and IGNOU. She has has also designed audio –visual courses for BRAOU. She is an active research guide for M.phil and Ph.d students registered under S.V. University, Global University and Dravidian University. One Ph.d and 4 M’Phils were submitted under her able guidance. She is a resource person to U.G.C. Nation wide Classroom Programmes and e- learning programmes conducted by EFLU.
She actively participates in conferences and also publishes research papers. She is also a co-author of four books. Dr. Swathi is a resource person to various reputed institutions like A.P. Judicial Academy, Police Academy, Animal Husbandry, Forest Academy, Geological Survey of India, Marri Chenna Reddy Institute of Human Excellence and to various schools and colleges.
Dr. Swathi is a General Secretary of Hyderabad Psychological association and organizes various open forums and workshops as her extension activities.
Assistant Professor (C), in the Department of Psychology, Nizam College since July 1996 to till date. Worked as Assistant Professor of Psychology in Eritrea (North East African Country) for two years (2003-2005).Co-authored a book on ‘Study Skills’ (Telugu version) and another one on Para Psychological Phenomena in Telugu (Adrushya Saktulu) published by Telugu University, Hyderabad. Published an article on
“Psychological Development among rural adolescents”, published by NCERT, New Delhi. Teaching classes for students of PGRR Centre for Distance Education, Osmania University and IGNOU. Delivered Guest lectures at BHEL, Andhra Pradesh Police Academy, at Biological Evans Ltd. Translated study material in psychology (into Telugu) for B.A. course offered by Dr. Ambedkar Open University. Guiding four P.G students of IGNOU in their project work.
