Department of Theatre Arts
The Department of Theatre Arts started in the year 1982 with a 2-year P.G. Diploma in Theatre Arts with an equal emphasis on academic study on Drama and Theatre and on presentation in several performances and continued the same course upto 1998. At present the Department offers a 2-year M.A. Course in Theatre Arts since 1998 in the place of 2-year P.G. Diploma in Theatre Arts and Ph.D Programme in Theatre Arts since 2005.
So far, at about 400 candidates completed P.G. Diploma in Theatre Arts and M.A. in Theatre Arts and many of them are working as Production Assistants, Producers in All India Radio, Doordarshan and S.I.E.T. Some of them are working in Song and Drama division and some are working as Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors in Theatre Arts discipline in different Universities. Many of them are continuing their career in the areas of Film, Television and Radio as Actors, Script Writers, Announcers and some of the students are continuing theatre activity. The course envisages training the students in all aspects of Theatre productions including Acting, Direction, Make-up, Stage-Lighting, Stage-Design and Mime. It also exposes the students to the acting and directing styles of the electronic media such as Radio and Television.
The Professional and practical oriented course comprising classroom practicals and play-productions are designed to give the necessary orientation to students, with an overall awareness of the traditional and modern trends in theatre.
It is a professional course that not only helps the students to do theatre activities but also is an essential qualification for the posts of Production Assistant, Producer, Programme Executive, Script Writer and Floor Manager in Doordarshan, S.I.E.T, All India Radio and other private electronic media organizations and the necessary qualification for getting the job of artists in Song and Drama division. |

Dr. Prasad Reddy’s Ph.D. thesis is the first thesis on Telugu Theatre. He has a Diploma in Acting, PG DTA (PG Dip. in Theatre Arts), |
PG DPR (PG Dip. in Public Relations), M.A.(AIHC&A), MA in Communication-Radio & TV. He has 16 years of experience in teaching in the Department of Theatre Arts. Acting, Direction and Drama through electronic media are his areas of specialisation. He has been appointed as the Chairperson BOS in 1994 and is continuing till date. He attended more than 10 seminars and presented papers on different fields of theatre conducted by the Department and other Universities.
He performed a Telugu play in South Zone Theatre Festival in 1985 at Ernakulam and participated in First Street Theatre Festival-cum-Competitions in 1990 organised by SCZCC at regional and zonal levels and got Best Director, Best Actor and Best Production awards. He represented the University of Hyderabad at south zone Inter-University cultural festival held in Chennai organised by SZCC in 1990. He participated in almost all well-known drama competitions and got Best Director, Best Actor and Best Script Writer awards nearly 50 times. He has 30 years of experience in Theatre as Writer, Actor, Director, Make-up Artist and Teacher and 20 years experience as judge for drama competitions at different levels. He was the First Ph. D scholar in Andhra Pradesh in Telugu Theatre and his was the first thesis on Modern Street Theatre in India.
He was a resource person for Science Kala Jata workshop meant for social awareness organised by Bharata Jana Gnana Vignana Jatha - 1992. He Served as Co-ordinator for Hyderabad, Ranga Reedy, Mahabubnagar districts to conduct Kala Jata programmes of BJGVJ and hundreds of performances given in 1993 meant for social awareness through performance. He is a resource person for all workshops in Theatre being organised by Praja Natya Mandali since 1988, he served as Committee Member of Nandi Drama festival from 1990 organised by Andhra Pradesh State Film, TV and Theatre Development Corporation. He was appointed as judge for Inter-University south zone drama competitions - 1999 conducted by S.V. University and for Nandi Drama competitions - 2002 conducted by APSFTV&TDC. He served as Advisory Committee member for National School of Drama-regional resource centre for 2 years.
He also conducted many Theatre workshops by NSD and other amateur organisations and acted as a resource person. He directed plays for AP state government under Velugu project as a part of its community development programme. He is the editor of Enclycopedia on Telugu Theatre which is under publication by P.S. Telugu University. He has written articles on different areas of Theatre and published in Janaganam, special issue of Andhra Pradesh Praja Natya Mandali and written 6 articles for the Enclycopedia under publication by P.S. Telugu University. |
