Department of Sociology

The Department of Sociology offers UG and PG courses along with two ‘Add on Courses’- ‘Diploma in Criminology and Correctional Administration’ and ‘Certificate Course in Human Relations and Personality Development’, at UG level. The other combinations along with Sociology are History, Geography; Psychology, Philosophy; Psychology and Marketing. The Department is specialized in ‘Development Studies’ with lot of emphasis on fieldwork including participatory rural appraisal and survey method. The Department collaborates with various voluntary organizations like CARPED, DHAN, MV Foundation, OXFAM, CHATRI etc for various field work programmes. The Department is supported by one Professor, 3 Associate Professors, 1 Assistant Professor and 2 academic consultants.

P. Jayaprakash Rao P. Jayaprakash Rao joined service in January 1975 and is Associate Professor since 1986. He got his M.A. in 1974 from JNTU, New Delhi and M.Phil in 1979.
His areas of specialisation are ‘Tribal Studies’, ‘Tribal Environment’ and ‘Forest Conversation’. He has published 4 research papers in national and international Journals. Some of them are, ‘Land struggle in tribal areas’ in ‘ Political Economy of Tribes’, 1980 and Co-authored a research paper with Hameindorf ,‘Tribes of India: Struggle for survival’, University of Berklin, 1980. He has promoted Joint Forest Management in collaboration with Forest Department in 1972-75. He launched ‘All India Tribal movement’ resulting in the Panchayats extension to schedule areas (1975-76). He is consultant to NIRD research projects on PESA, 2003 and Coordinator for coastal districts of AP. He participated in “Year of Scientific Awareness, 2004-05”, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.

R. Suryanarayana Reddy R.Suryanarayana Reddy joined service on 21st November 1983 and is Associate Professor since 1991.
He got his M.A. in 1976 from JNTU, New Delhi, M.Phil in 1980 (Part I). His areas of specialisation are ‘Development and Change’; ‘Sociological Theory and Thought’, ‘Modernity-Post Modernity’ and interest areas include ‘Tribal and Rural Development’, ‘Globalization, Development and change’. He has published 4 research papers in national journals and books. He has held many administrative positions including Chief PRO, Osmania University, Deputy Director and Director- Academic Staff College, Osmania University, Head, Department of Sociology, Nizam College. Presently nominated member of Academic Council, Nizam College and Coordinator - Academic and Corporate affairs, Nizam College and Coordinator- Diploma Course in Human Relations and Personality Development


Dr. S. Devaprakasham,

Dr. S. Devaprakasham Dr. S. Devaprakasham joined service in January 1992 and is Associate Professor since 2000. He got his M.A. in 1978, M.Phil in 1984 and Ph.D in 1994.
His area of Specialisation is ‘Medical Sociology’ and interest areas include ‘Rural Sociology’. He has Published 5 research papers in national journals and 1 book ‘Testimony of Homeopaths on HIV- AIDS.’ Significant publications are ‘Self Medication and Meddlingwith Disease’, Orient Journal of law and Social Sciences, Vol. 1 (11) Jan 2007and ‘Precautions for Healthy living’, Orient Journal of law and Social Sciences, Vol 1 (4) March 2007.He has done two research projects: ‘AIDS in Homeopathy perspective’ (UGC, 2005) and ‘Care for Health Recovery’, (UGC- SAP, 2007)

Aijaz-Ur- Rehman Mr.Aijaz-Ur- Rehman joined service on 16th January 1992 and is Assistant Professor (selection grade since 2007). He got his M.A. in 1983 and M.Phil in 1990.
His areas of specialisations are ‘Sociology of Health and Medicine’, ‘Economic Sociology and Development’ and interest areas are ‘Environment and Globalization’. He has published 1 research paper in ‘Bulletin of Indian Institute of History of Medicine’ (Vol. 21, 1991) and the title is ‘Growth of Hospital in Hyderabad’ (C. 1880-C.1950) – ‘The Historical and Demographic Aspect.’
