Department of Psychology
The Department of Psychology, Nizam College, which was established in 1963, is the only department to offer Psychology at B.A. for boys in twin cities. The Department offers an undergraduate course. Currently, the Department has three teachers and one lab staff. The Department has well qualified faculty with rich research experience and an equal proficiency in extension activities of testing and counseling. The Department also runs a Counseling centre which was established in the year 1984. It is the only Department to offer psychological counseling even to boys. University offered ‘One time Grant’ in 1991and the Centre was restarted as ‘Centre for Counseling and meditation’ in 1997. Now, under Centre of Potential Excellence -“Psychological Testing and Counseling Centre” was sanctioned (2005-2007).Activities of Counseling Centre: Seminar on ‘Self managing leadership for dealing with life’ (1998) and “Self Development and Meditation Programmes to students” (2003).
Under CPE scheme, the Department wants to expand, the Psychological Testing and Counseling Centers. The Department plans to start a One –Semester self financed course on “Personality Development” for the Nizam College students. The course emphasizes on enhancing life Skills by maximizing potentialities and minimizing weaknesses. The Department wants to start a 3-Semester self financed course on “Student counseling”. This course would produce well trained student counselors who can work in educational institutes to provide psychological help in all the phases of their life in times of need. It is the only department in the state to take the initiative to start vocational course of “Advertising, Sales Promotion and Sales Management” in 1994(funded for 5 years by UGC).Since 1999 Nizam College incorporated it as self financing course and offered it as one of the optional subjects. It is renamed as “Marketing Communications and MediaStudy” which also includes Multimedia as part of practical paper. The faculty for this subject includes one full time academic consultant and a part-timer. The course is well equipped with audio-visual aids and a seminar library. The Department of Psychology plans to include the various fields of Applied Psychology as subjects to cater to the needs of the youth in the changing global scenario. |
