Department of Microbiology

The Department offers Microbiology as an optional for B.Sc. degree course. The course was started in 1984 with an intake of 15 students and the combination was Microbiology, Botany & Chemistry. Subsequently, the course was offered along with Genetics and Chemistry besides the above combinations. Presently the combination offered is Microbiology, Genetics & Chemistry.

The Microbiology curriculum is offered in the semester pattern spread over three years with two semesters per year. The papers include: General Microbiology, Virology& Microbial physiology, Molecular Biology & Microbial Genetics, Immunology and Antimicrobial Agents, Microbial Biotechnology I & II, Food and Agricultural Microbiology and Medical Microbiology.

In addition to the above mentioned under graduate courses the department has offered courses in Microbiology to students of B.Sc. (Biophysics) and B.Sc. (Seed Technology) and Fundamentals of Microbiology to B.Sc. (Biotechnology). The Department has rendered assistance in practical training to students of M. Sc. (Zoology), Nizam College and B. Tech. (Biotechnology) of BVRIT College.

The admission to Microbiology stream is highly competitive, further limited strength makes its tough and the cut off marks is over 85%. The creamy part of the +2 students gets admitted to the course, this has been observed over the decades. Performance of students is highly commendable with 70-80% getting placed in post graduate programmes in prestigious central (HCU, Pondicherry, NCL, Madurai Kamraj) and state universities (Osmania, Kakatiya, Nagarjuna) Departments. Mr. V MSS Murthy of 2001 batch bagged the top position in most of the PG entrance exams and is currently pursuing Ph.D. program at NCL, Pune. Several students are pursuing doctoral programs. One of the alumni from the Department Mr. Anand Govindaluri has established a Biotech industry in Singapore. Campus placements have given scope for direct recruitments of our students.

Students have participated in a conference on Biotechnology organised by Genome Valley, Govt., of AP. Students have participated in summer projects and regularly attend popular lectures at institutes like CCMB, IICT etc.

The staff also participates in various conferences at various levels and has presented papers. Teachers are involved in examination activities and have been examiners at different autonomous colleges besides Osmania University. Teachers are involved in extension activities like guiding students and encouraging them to carry out short-term projects, some of which are: 1. Isolation and identification of Cellulolytic Bacteria from Fecal Sample of Birds and Animals in Nehru Zoological Park, 2. Isolation an Identification of Crude Oil Degrading Bacteria from Various Garbage Soil Samples, 3. Isolation And Identification Of Polythene Degrading Bacteria From Various Polythene Manufacturing Dumping Sites, 4. Isolation and Identification Of Corncob Degrading Bacteria, 5. Study Of Micro Flora From Rhizophere Of Healthy And Diseased Plants
