Department of History
The Department of History, Nizam College is as old as the College itself, being one of the first departments to start functioning. The Department has been offering History courses for both undergraduate (B.A) and postgraduate (M.A) degrees. In the initial years, only Intermediate and undergraduate courses were offered in the College. The intermediate course was, however, discontinued in the 1960s, since then, the Department has been offering History Course for Undergraduates. The Department has moved with the times in reviewing syllabi and updating pedagogical strategies from time to time. The conferment of Autonomy to the college in 1988-89 provided the academic freedom to the Department to frame its own syllabi for History that is taught through six semesters for BA English and Telugu media.
The review of the syllabi for the undergraduate courses is a continuous process and the Board of Studies Constituted by the Department is the supervising and ratifying body that meets annually for the purpose. The college has also adopted the semester system of teaching and evaluation, exams are duly conducted and results are awarded. The Department has also been offering Postgraduate course (M.A) in Indian history from 1984. Eminent persons like Prof. Fulam Yazdani, Prof. Harronkhan Sherwani, Prof. Marenanla Rama Rao, Prof. Srinivasa Chari, Prof. Ramanayam Narsima Rao, Prof. Sarojini Regani, Prof. Vaikuntham, etc., have adorned this Department. The Department has infrastructure facilities - Computer and Photo-Pane which are utilized by the students and teachers. The Department has a seminar library which has about 2500 books of History. The Department also subscribes three journals - Social Scientist, Indian Historical Review and Indian Economic and Social History Review. |
