Department of Genetics
The Department offers Genetics as an optional for the B.Sc. Degree course. The course was started in 1979 with an intake of 30 students and the combinations were Genetics, Botany & Chemistry and Genetics, Zoology & Chemistry. Subsequently, the course was offered along with Biophysics and Chemistry besides the above combinations. Presently the combination offered is Microbiology, Genetics & Chemistry. The Department is also anchoring a self-financing course in Biotechnology, which is one of the optional subjects at the UG level; the profile of the course is documented separately. The genetics curriculum is offered in the semester pattern from 1990 onwards, spread over three years with two semesters per year. The papers include: General Genetics 1 & 2; Genetics of Microorganisms, Molecular Genetics, Applied Genetics (Quantitative Genetics & Breeding Principles in Plants & Animals), Applied Genetics 2 (Human Genetics & Immuno Genetics), Biometry & Populations Genetics, Evolutionary Genetics , Eugenics and Genetic Engineering.
In addition to the above mentioned undergraduate courses the Department has offered courses in Genetics to students of B.Sc. (Biophysics) and B.Sc. (Seed Technology), Genetics & Biostatistics to B.Sc. (Biotechnology). The Department has offered courses in Cell & Molecular Biology to M.Sc. (Biological Sciences), Genetics to M.Sc. (Zoology) and the staff has offered course in Cell Biology to M.Sc. (Biotechnology) at Osmania University
The student's performance has been highly satisfactory with over 70% getting first division. Majority of them are securing placements in PG programs and have pursued/are pursuing courses in central institutes like IISC, NCL, JNU, Madurai Kamaraj Univ., BHU, Pondicherry Central University, HCU and state Universities like Osmania, Kakatiya, Nagarjuna & Andhra Universities. Two of the student's- Jayanthi & Mahipal topped the Life Sciences entrance exams at HCU in the past. Mr. K.Subash was one among the 8 selected on an all India Basis for an integrated Ph.D. program at IISC. Shashidhar preceded him earlier. On an average one or two candidates are getting admitted to Masters/Doctoral programs at USA, UK and other countries following their graduation followed by one year study elsewhere. Campus placements have given scope for direct recruitments to some of our students. Students have participated in events like Bio-conference organised by Bio-Vision, Genome Valley, Govt., of AP. Students have participated in summer projects, notable among them is the work carried out by one our student at Rajiv Gandhi Biotechnology Center, Thiruvananthapuram and short term projects at CCMB and other private Institutions.
One of the staff (SPR) was selected as a Professor under the UNDP program and has served at Ethiopia over a two-year period. Besides teaching, he was involved in the administrative activities viz. inspecting of various colleges of Dilla University, Ethiopia.

Biotechnology (A self financing course) - Anchored by Genetics Department
Biotechnology course was introduced as an optional subject in 2002. The combinations were Bt, Botany & Chemistry/Bt, Zoology & Chemistry/Bt, and Microbiology & Chemistry. The course is totally a self financed one. Initially during the year of inception staff of Genetics & Microbiology handled the course. Subsequently in 2003 candidates with M.Sc. (Biotechnology) qualification were appointed. Presently subject is offered only with either Botany or Zoology and Chemistry. The Biotechnology curriculum is offered in the semester pattern spread over three years with two semesters per year. The papers include: Fundamentals of Biotechnology (1& 2), Biological Chemistry (1 & 2), Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, and Applications of Biotechnology-1 (Animal & Industrial Biotechnology) Applications of Biotechnology-2 (Plant & Environmental Biotechnology).
The response to the course is overwhelming and most sought after among all the UG programs, Over 2500 applicants competed for 60 seats during academic year 2006-2007. This is amply reflected by the cut off mark, which was 92% scored at the +2 level. The admissions are open to only those with biological science background at +2 level. Majority of them are from rural background and Telugu media students are in large numbers. Their performance truly reflects their academic merit with majority of them passing out with first division and distinction. The objective of most of them is to go in for higher study and they have been able to clear the PG entrance examination. Two batches have rolled out so far and many are enrolled in PG programs. Ajay Chandra of 2003 batch was selected to the integrated Ph.D. program at IISc, Sahitya of the same batch was recruited by Reddy Labs. The student's seem to be fascinated by the growth of knowledge in this field and research and employment potential. Rightfully BT can be considered happening subject next to IT. Students of the final year class have been deputed attend lectures and participate conferences like the Bio-Asia - Bio conference organised by the Government of A.P. Some of students are able get placement through our campus placements programme.
