Department of Botany
The Department of Botany was started in the year 1956 with graduation and became a postgraduate centre in 1980 offering M.Sc. in Biological Sciences. Within a couple of years M.Sc. Botany replaced M.Sc. Biological Sciences. Mycology, Plant Pathology, Anatomy, Embryology, Cytology and Cytogenetics were other specialisations catered to the P.G. students in due course.
For over a quarter century, this Department has been recognized as a research center providing facilities for research in Mycology and Plant Pathology, Ecology, Chemotaxonomy, Embryology and Anatomy. Over 25 research scholars have worked here and got their Ph.D. degrees. The faculty has published 200 papers. Four projects have also been completed in the Department. Dr. Radhakrishnaiah, retired Professor of Botany, O.U, while he was in the Department authored four books - two for Telugu Academy and two for P.G students on Chemotaxonomy and Plant Nomenclature. Dr. M. Shyamala Ravishankar has written course books for M.Sc. (final year) for BRA Open University, Hyderabad on Embryology and Angiosperms. Dr. Dhrubash Karan, retired Professor and former Principal, Nizam College has completed a UGC funded project. In addition, under his supervision Dr. Neeti Saxena was selected for two terms of five years each as Research Associate (UGC), where she completed postdoctoral projects on Post Harvest Studies on Oil Seeds.
The practicals of a Refresher Course held by OU, Academic Staff College were conducted in the departmental labs, the resource persons being the faculty of this Department. The teachers update their knowledge at regular intervals by attending refresher courses, conferences and workshops. The Department has the entire infrastructure needed for M.Sc. Botany, which can be started as self-financing course. At least twenty students can be admitted, as the necessary infrastructure is already available inclusive of lab, equipment and department seminar library. The aim of the Department is to turn out good and confident students of both UG and PG by giving them chance to speak in class seminars, deputing them to any workshop/seminar held for their level, by infusing enthusiasm and confidence in them and by personal and academic counseling. |
